BREAKFAST WITH THE LEMURS 16 DAYS

THE EAST AND SOUTH OF MADAGASCAR

DAY 1: ANTANANARIVO

At the Antananarivo airport in you will be greeted by our guide from the agency and he will take you to the hotel.

Day 2: ANTANANARIVO – ANDASIBE NIGH WALK

We will leave in the morning to Andasibe. First stop will be to the Madagascar Exotic park, a private reserve where you can see lemurs, chameleons, frogs, reptiles, butterflies, and snakes. Upon arrival in Andasibe we will check in at the hotel. The afternoon will be free for any activity. After sunset, we will go on a night walk with the local guide naturalist. This will be a rare occasion to see the smallest of the lemurs (the mouse lemur), chameleons, and frogs.

Day 3:ANDASIBE NATIONAL PARK

During the morning, we will visit the Andasibe Perinet National Park with a local guide/naturalist. Get prepared to see and hear one of the most famous lemurs, the Indri. The Indri is the biggest lemur in the world and has a unique and powerful call that once heard you will remember it for life. Several other lemur species are present in the park which you will get to see up-close. After having lunch at noon, we will go to visit the Vakona private reserve. In this reserve, you will be able to have a close encounter with the lemurs, here the lemurs are used to interact with humans and can be touched or hugged. Part of the same reservation is a Crocodile Park, which can also be visited.

Day 4: ANDASIBE – ANTSIRABE

In the morning, we will start driving back to the capital, then continue to the south to Antsirabe along the RN7. We will stop in the town of Ambatolampy to do a short visit of the local aluminum foundry where local craftsmen sell various aluminum made objects. Here we will also stop to have lunch before continuing the drive to Antsirabe, where we will stay overnight.

Day 5: ANTSIRABE

After breakfast, we will drive to the west to visit the Betafo village. We will leave the car and continue on foot to enjoy the beautiful landscape. Part of the walk will be through the traditional village and the terraces of traditional rice plantation. At noon, we will have a small picnic lunch after which we will return to car and to Antsirabe. On the way back we will stop at the Andraikiba lake.

RANOMAFANA NATIONAL PARK

Day: 6 ANTSIRABE – RANOMAFANA

In the morning, we will start to drive to the rain forest of Ranomafana. On the way we will stop in Ambositra to visit the local wood handcrafters workshops. During lunch, we will see the local Malagasy performing folkloric dances and signing Malagasy music. In the evening, we will arrive in Ranomafana, where we will check-in at the hotel and have dinner.

Day 7: RANOMAFANA – THE RAIN FOREST

The visit to the Ranomafana National Park will start after breakfast. In the park, you will be accompanied by the local guide/naturalist and you will have the chance to see species of lemur that live there in the rain forest. After the visit in the Park, we will have lunch and relax for the rest of the afternoon. In the evening we will go on a night adventure to spot frogs and nocturnal lemurs.

Day 8: RANOMAFANA - CAMP CATA

After breakfast, we will be back on the road. We will go through thought the city of Fianarantsoa, the second largest city in Madagascar, then continues to Ambalavao. On this road, the landscape will change dramatically, we will see the majestic Andringitra mountains slowly rising in the background. In Ambalavao we will stop to see the fascinating process of silk production, and the traditional paper factory. After the visits, we will continue to drive until we reach the Anja Natural Reserve, where we will stop to eat, and go to a visit in the natural reserve where many ring-tailed lemurs and chameleon can be seen, as well as ancient tombs of the ancestors of the Malagasy people. In the evening, we will reach Camp Cata where we will stay overnight.

RANOMAFANA NATIONAL PARK

Day 9: CAMP CATTA – THE LEMURS AND THE RESERVE

Camp Catta is a one of a kind experience. In the morning, you will have quite an interesting breakfast experience, where tens of wild ring tailed lemurs descend from the mountain trough Camp Catta and stop on top of the small huts to enjoy the warmth of the sunrise, all of this while you enjoy your morning coffee. This we call the “Petit-déjeuner avec des lémuriens”. Next you will have the opportunity to visit the sacred forest, climb one of the nearby mountain peaks to see the whole valley, visit the local villages, or simply just relax and go for a swim in the ecological swimming pool from Camp Catta while you wait for the lemurs to return in the evening.

Day 10: CAMP CATTA – RANOHIRA

After the Petit-déjeuner avec des lémuriens we will start to drive until Ranohira through the largest plateau of Horombe. Once again, the landscape will change dramatically. Once we arrive in Ranohira we will check in the hotel and have lunch. In the afternoon at 04:30 PM we will go to the famous window of Isalo to contemplate the sunset.

Day 11: RANOHIRA – ISALO NATIONAL PARK

Early in the morning we will go to the National Park, accompanied by the park ranger. We will hike through the canyons and oases of Isalo. Occasionally the lunar landscape will lead you to a few beautiful waterfalls. This environment was formed during the Jurassic age where the unique flora has evolved adapting to the existing conditions. There are 77 species of birds live that live in Isalo, and several species of lemurs, including the world famous ring tailed lemurs. After the canyon, we will go to different a place to see a panoramic view of the landscape. In the National Park, you will have the opportunity to go for a short swim in several natural formed swimming pools. After the park visit, in the evening, we will have dinner in the town of Ranohira. Here you will have the option to eat genuine pizza made by an Italian who has been living in Madagascar for many years now.

Day 12: RANOHIRA - IFATY

In the morning, we will start to drive towards Ifaty. On the way, we will pass by numerous villages formed by the sapphire rush, and villages where local rum is made. Before entering the port city of Tulear we will have the option to visit the Antsokay arboretum which holds and impressive collection of endemic plants, which you can learn about there. We will stop for lunch in Tulear, before continuing to Ifaty where we will stay for the next 2 days.

Day 13-14: IFATY

Ifaty is a small fishing village at the sea. It has beautiful beaches with palm trees and hammocks to relax in. The seafood here is excellent and fresh, you can even see the fisherman returning with the daily catch which in the evening will be on the menus. Several activities can be done here and it is up to you and the guide to decide which ones you are more interested in. The activities include:
1) Diving or snorkeling in coral reef. You can visit the Rose Garden Marine Reserve which is a protected region of the coral reef that has a large colony of Montipora or Rose shaped corals.
2) Visit the Renala private reserve – here you can see and learn about the spiny forest, baobabs, succulent plants, cacti, endemic birds, chameleons, and you can even see the tenrec in his natural habitat.
3) Visit the Tulear markets and shop for local craftwork 4) Simply enjoy the sun, warm water, have a cold drink at beach, and enjoy the gourmet local seafood.

Day 15: IFATY- ANTANANARIVO

You will go to the airport in Tulear and will flight back to Antananarivo. At arrival you will be greeted by our local guide who will transport you to the hotel in Antananarivo.

Day 16: THE CHECK OUT

We will pick you up from the hotel and take you to the airport to take your return flight home.
